The Yes guitar virtuoso jams some electric sitar on this great instrumental track. From the CD " Spectrum".

Great stratocaster sounds from the former Be Bop Deluxe guitarist overlayed on huge dance beats..."it's a jazz joint"

King Crimson-The Power to Believe ll

Usually lumped in as prog rock band, the Crims are almost impossible to label. They are probably one of the most daring and original bands of all time featuring top notch musicians throughout their 30 plus years together. Though the line up has changed frequently, guitar virtuoso Robert Fripp has been the one constant. This song has a beautiful percussive middle section and will be my song of choice next time I want to test-drive a new stereo system.

Deep Purple-Rapture of the Deep

This is the title cut from their new Cd. I can't understand why classic rock radio refuses to play it, because it' great. Steve Morse's guitar playing is outstanding and Ian Gillan still has one of the best shrieks in rock. The bonus CD includes a few more tunes with Morse' s solo "the well-groomed guitar" being a stand out. Also included is an excellent live version of "highway star" with a cool intro.

One fo the best songs I've heard in years; beautiful, yet tragic like a Neil Young or Bob Dylan song. This live version is better than the studio one.

City Boy-The Day The Earth Caught Fire

  • Sep 11, 2006

Another band that doesn't get the airplay they deserve, City Boy was a great band of the late 70's that made some great albums, the first 5 of which were produced by Mutt Lange-the future Mr Shania Twain?! Their sound is probably closest to Queen or 10cc, with some excellent vocal harmonies and superior musicianship, especially from guitarist Mike Slamer. If you can find the CD's " Book Early" or "The Day the Earth Caught Fire", or their last " Heads are Rolling", grab it. They also made an 18 song anthology that's very good, but is missing some of their heavier  and more progressive tunes...though when you listen to this collection, you'll wonder why every song wasn't a hit.

Captain Beyond-Sufficiently Breathless

  • Sep 5, 2006

One of the great unsung bands of the 70's, with former members of Deep Purple, Johnny Winter's band,  and Iron Butterfly. Keyboard player went on to join Stevie Ray Vaughn's Double Trouble.  Excellent prog rock for your listening pleasure....
